The Carceral Geography Working Group (CGWG) of the RGS-IBG invites Expressions of Interest from potential organising committees for the 4th International Conference for Carceral Geography.
Following the success of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd International Conferences (in 2016 & 2017 at the University of Birmingham, 2018 at the University of Liverpool), the committee of the CGWG has taken the decision that the 4th conference should be held in 2020, and that the opportunity to determine a conference theme, and to organise and host the event, should be opened up to the international community of scholars in this area.
Expressions of Interest should, in the first instance, be sent to Dominique Moran, Chair of the CGWG, at firstname.lastname@example.org, by 30 April 2019. A selection of potential organising committees would then be invited to complete a Full Proposal by the deadline of 28 May 2019.
The International Conference for Carceral Geography has thus far been run on a break-even basis, as a free-to-attend event, with free registration for both speakers and non-presenting delegates. Undergraduate student engagement in previous conferences, alongside this policy of non-charged attendance, has enabled venue hire charges at host institutions to be waived. Optional catering has been charged to delegates at cost price, and local financial support (i.e. from host universities, associated research grants etc.) has funded travel and accommodation bursaries for speakers. This mode of organisation has been successful in enabling attendance from speakers and delegates without the means to attend chargeable conferences, and has been felt to be in the spirit of the intentions of the Carceral Geography Working Group. All three previous conferences received more than 100 registrations.
Potential organising committees are by no means restricted to this previous financial model, but they are encouraged to give careful thought to the financial arrangements for their proposals for the 4th International Conference for Carceral Geography. They should set out clearly in their full proposal any registration fee they intend to charge, how it would be spent, and any plans for bursaries for speakers and/or delegates, together with any sponsorships from participating universities.
It is anticipated that financial support provided by the RGS-IBG for the next International Conference (£500 Sterling) would be available to the successful organising committee, in support of travel/accommodation bursaries for speakers – on the condition that at least one member of the organising committee is a member of the CGWG and RGS-IBG. (Note that reciprocal membership of the RGS-IBG is available via other learned societies such as the AAG and the CAG).
Expressions of Interest and Full Proposals
In order to select both the EoIs to invite to Full Proposal stage, and the next organising committee itself, the CGWG will be looking for:
- An appropriate conference theme likely to have broad appeal to the interdisciplinary community to whom the conference has previously appealed.
- An appropriate conference venue likely to enable attendance from both local and international speakers and delegates, and possibly to enable attendance from speakers and delegates who may not have attended previous UK-based conferences.
- Evidence of pragmatic logistical planning for the proposed conference (in terms of financial model, venue, etc.).
- Evidence that the proposed conference would provide a stimulating intellectual environment for speakers and delegates.
To download all of this information (including the forms for the Expression of Interest, and Full Proposal) as one Word document, go to 4th International Carceral Geography Conference – Call for EoI.
